Our FE & HE Services

Since 2014, HTS has partnered with Scotland’s colleges and universities to provide qualified Specialist Tutors, ASC Mentors, Mental Health Mentors, Notetakers and Study Assistants for disabled students. We deliver both in-person and remote support to Further and Higher Education students across Scotland to cater to a wide range of support needs.

Qualified

All of our support workers are fully qualified, GTC Scotland-registered teachers and/or at least SCQF Level-9 qualified 3rd level support specialists. HTS is also a Disclosure Scotland-Registered Body and all tutors undergo stringent PVG Scheme checks and interview prior to working with any students.

No 1 Ranked

HTS is ranked No 1 amongst competitive tendering agencies for ASC mentor provision and NMPH assessment lots in the Public Tender Award for Edinburgh College, 2023-2025, and No 1 for both general NMPH and ASC student support in the 2019-2-23 Edinburgh College public tender processes.

Satisfied and Successful Students

We provide a responsive, student-centred service and this is reflected in the results we achieve. In 2022-2023:

  • 95% of students in receipt of HTS’ support described themselves as ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with their support.

  • 98% of students used positive comments, such as ‘adaptable’, ‘encouraging’ and ‘supportive’ to describe their Support Worker.

  • 97% of students said they would be ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to recommend HTS to a friend.

Our Learning Support Roles

  • Since 2010, HTS have provided experienced Readers, Scribes, Prompts and Invigilators for assessment support across eleven FE/HE institutions. We have received excellent feedback, increased allocations of this type of support, and are able to arrange at short notice.

  • Home Tuition Scotland has 10 years’ experience of providing qualified and experienced Mental Health Mentors (MHM) for College and University students, each requiring an individual approach.

HTS MHMs are all British Council of Counsellors and Psychotherapist (or equivalent)-registered professionals. They offer theoretical and practical knowledge of the different mental health challenges that can arise, mental health first aid training, and know how to deliver effective support to help ensure students complete their courses.

We provide specialist mentors to suit each individual student, for example, if a student has C/PTSD, we can allocate a trauma-expert, so they can help the student identify and develop strategies to cope with potential triggers.

  • HTS has experienced and qualified Needs Assessors, demonstrating a wide knowledge of disability/Additional Support Needs, who can provide student needs assessments at either FE or HE level.

  • Home Tuition Scotland works with Further and Higher education institutions across Scotland to provide professional Note-taking services for disabled students.

    All of our Note-takers:

    • Are experienced Note-takers who are educated to at least SCQF Level 9 standard

    • Work with students, lecturers and other staff (where appropriate), such as BSL interpreters, to ensure high quality notes

  • HTS have been providing professional Proofreading services for over 15 years. Wherever possible, where Study Skills support is also being provided, we allocate the same person to undertake the proofreading. We can also provide standalone Proofreading services. HTS always endeavours to give individual students proofreading skills to encourage metacognition and independent learning.

  • Home Tuition Scotland offers over 10 years’ experience working with ASC-learners at Scotland’s FE Colleges and Universities.

Therefore, we apply practical knowledge of the types of challenges providing ASC support may raise, and the qualifications, experience and temperament that Learning Support Workers must have to enable each individual student to receive the most beneficial help.

For example, if a student has complex needs and challenging behaviour, then it will be necessary to arrange a mentor with sufficient experience in this, rather than someone who has only worked with mild Asperger’s.

Our ASC mentors are experts on transitions and are well-versed in liaising with student advocates, both professional and family.

HTS is a UK-Department for Education registered ASC Support practitioner so you can be assured our ASC mentors meet relevant SAAS, SFE/SFW or SFNI qualifications and requirements.

Home Tuition Scotland is a registered UK-Department of Education Specialist Study Skills practitioner so you can be assured our tutors meet the relevant SAAS or SFE/SFW/SFNI requirements.

Our Director offers academic expertise in providing one-to-one study support skills tuition for students with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including:

  • Since 2014, Home Tuition Scotland has provided Study Assistants for students studying from NC to master’s degree qualifications.

We provide in-class and out-of-class support for a range of differing needs, including mental health challenges, visual and hearing impairments, and severe physical disabilities.

We apply our knowledge to appoint the most appropriate Study Assistant for each individual student, as we know what type of challenges can arise, often working to tight turnaround deadlines.

We conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation through regular Learning Support Worker reporting and student surveys.
