Tuning a Fiddle with your Fiddle tutor Edinburgh
Our Fiddle tutors Edinburgh, like most experienced fiddle-players, will demand for a note of A in order to begin tuning. They then tune their A string by comparing the pitch of the Fiddle string with the instrument playing the A note. Once that string’s in tune, the D is tuned by comparing the two strings. The two strings are a fifth apart and the beat between the two notes is obvious. Once the D is in tune, G is tuned to the D, again a fifth apart, and finally the E is tuned to the A string. The Fiddle tutor Edinburgh will often ask for the A again just to test that their A string is still in tune.
For beginning Fiddlers students this method is hard as it needs a well developed ear. Instead, someone can play the individual notes on the piano and your child can tune each string to the corresponding note. Fiddle purists may disagree with this because the notes on the piano are a little different from the notes on the fiddle, but it’s close enough for the majority students.
The crucial thing if you are beginning Fiddle tuition Edinburgh is to be mindful and not rush it. For example, it is quite easy to over-tighten the E string and break the string. Your Fiddle tutor Edinburgh can help to show you how to stop this.
As you tune the strings it is possible that the top of bridge will start moving in the direction of the string. This can result in the Fiddle bridge eventually tilting or even falling over with a loud noise leaving you shocked and holding a piece of wood with strings curling off in all directions. There is no need to worry as it seldom damages the fiddle and it’s easy to put it back together. If you see your bridge tilting then ask your Fiddle tutor Edinburgh. It only takes a second to put right and once you’ve been shown how you can do it yourself.
When you screw the fine adjusters in to tighten strings be careful not to screw them down so far that they press into the top of the fiddle, damaging the varnish or maybe even the wood.
All our Fiddle tuition Edinburgh is conducted by qualified and registered Fiddle teachers. We do not offer music students or non-qualified teachers.
