How to Tune Your Violin with your Violin tutor Edinburgh
The violin has four strings and they are tuned, moving from right to left, to G, D, A and E (G being the thickest string and E the thinnest). When the violin was invented the strings were made from catgut, or animal sinew. Gut strings are stretchy and the strings can be tuned just by using the violin’s tuning pegs. However, most new violins have steel strings which are not very stretchy. Your Violin tutor Edinburgh will be able to show that tuning them just using the pegs is very challenging. Just a tiny degree of turning at the peg changes the pitch of the string quite a long way and it is hard to be accurate with a peg.
The answer is the fine adjuster on the tailpiece of your violin.
Most violins have an integrated tailpiece with the fine adjusters built into it. Some better quality modern strings have a nylon or synthetic core. This allows some of the stretchiness of gut strings but retains the pitch of steel strings and the strings stay in tune well. This allows them to be tuned without using the fine adjusters.
Your Violin tutor Edinburgh can show that the regular technique of tuning the violin is to tune the A string and then adjust the other strings from this. If a string is far out of tune then it is usual to adjust it using the appropriate peg until it is nearly in tune and then bring it to exact tune using the adjuster. If a string is fairly close to being in tune then using the adjuster will be fine.
